How Much Sand Do Sandbags Need?
A 40 lb sandbag holds about 0.4 cubic feet of sand if dry sand is near 100 lb per cubic foot. A 50 lb bag holds about 0.5 cubic feet, and a 60 lb bag holds about 0.6 cubic feet. Moisture, fill level, and material density change the real value.
Why Add Extra Sandbags?
Extra bags help cover corners, tie-ins, uneven ground, settling, damaged bags, overlaps, and last-minute changes. For flood preparation, a 10% to 20% spare allowance is usually more practical than buying the exact calculated number.
Sandbag Safety and Placement
Sandbags work best when placed before water arrives, filled only partway, flattened into place, and overlapped like brickwork. For serious flooding, follow local emergency management guidance instead of relying only on a calculator.
