Pounds of salt = pool gallons x ppm increase x 0.00000834.
Kilograms of salt = pool litres x ppm increase / 1,000,000.

What PPM Should a Salt Water Pool Target?
Many salt chlorine generators are designed to work around 2,700 to 3,400 ppm, and 3,200 ppm is a common working target. Brand settings can vary, so use the manual for your Hayward, Pentair, Intex, Clorox, Morton, or other salt system as the final source.
How to Avoid Adding Too Much Salt
Test First
Do not rely only on the control panel reading if it seems wrong; confirm with a fresh test.
Add 70% to 80% First
Salt is easy to add but usually requires dilution or water replacement to lower.
Brush and Circulate
Let the pump run and keep undissolved salt away from surfaces and equipment.
Retest After 24 Hours
Add the remaining amount only after the pool is mixed and the reading stabilizes.
Above Ground, Intex, Hayward, and Pentair Pools
The same ppm math works for above ground and inground pools. The difference is usually volume accuracy and manufacturer target range. Smaller Intex-style pools can overshoot quickly, so use exact litres or gallons and add salt in smaller steps.
Why Salt Changes Month to Month
Salt does not evaporate, but salt level can drop when water leaves the pool through splash-out, backwashing, leaks, draining, or heavy overflow. The monthly water replacement field helps estimate maintenance salt after dilution.
