What Score Do I Need for a 3, 4, or 5?
Choose a target score of 3, 4, or 5 in the result card. The calculator shows how many estimated composite points you need and converts the gap into rough MCQ, FRQ, or balanced improvement targets.
Target 3
Focus on reaching the qualifying range first. If your estimate is below 50 composite points, improve whichever section has more remaining room.
Target 4
Look for the fastest composite gain. Many students can move from a 3 estimate to a 4 estimate by combining several more MCQ answers with one stronger essay.
Target 5
A 5 estimate usually needs both strong MCQ accuracy and consistent FRQ scores. Use Rubric Mode to find the essay category that costs the easiest points.

The calculator is designed for the current AP English Language exam structure. College Board lists the 2026 exam as digital, but the main scoring structure remains 45 multiple-choice questions worth 45% and 3 free-response questions worth 55%. If College Board changes exam weighting, question counts, or essay scoring, the calculator should be updated before relying on it for a new testing year.
